Originally a novice in the Benedictine monastery of Stift Melk, he went to study surgery in Vienna & began to sing to earn himself some money. His talent was recognised and he began singing for the Wiener Hofoper (Vienna state opera). In 1831 he became a court singer (Hofkapellsänger). By the 1840's he was at Covent Garden, & became internationally esteemed. Some time after 1856 he became mentally ill & was admitted to the National Lunatic asylum Vienna where he died. The cemetery opened in 1874 and 2,900 patient burials in anonymous graves took place before the graveyard closed in 1963. The mental health hospital closed in 1991.
