Sep. 09, 1972 - US Stars Banned for Life from Olympic Games. Vince Matthews and Wayne Collett, the American athletes have been banned for life from the Olympic Games. The ban followed their behaviour on the rostrum while the American National Anthem was being played. Matthews had won the Gold Medal and Collett the Silver, in the 400 Metres. After the ceremony, Matthews took the Gold Medal from his neck and twirled it around his finger.
