An old engraving of Blanchard’s lathe of 1822. It is from a Victorian book of the 1890s on discoveries and inventions during the 1800s. Thomas Blanchard (1788–1864) was an American inventor who lived most of his life in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA where in 1819, he pioneered the assembly line for mass production in America, and also invented the first machining lathe for interchangeable parts. Blanchard worked, for much of his career, with the Springfield Armory. Blanchard invented a machine tool that streamlined the manufacture of gun barrels. Current 56-4-1960 : House and work - and hope! Around 175 people currently work in the various companies in the Løren centre, of which around 100 are disabled. The majority of them live in the dormitory building, which is fifty meters away and can accommodate a total of 90 people. At Løren, disabled people have got a house and a job - and hope! The guys at the revolver lathe, Sverre Schulze and Torbjørn Rud, are blind. They do fine work in Blindes Industriverksted, which employs 30 people. Current 21-4-1950: Rosenberg: A technical adventureIn a hellish nook, bad welding can be pretty fatal. Rosenberg mechanical workshop takes X-rays of the boats they build before they release them into the world's oceans. They have had a violent expansion after the war, and are now undoubtedly Norway's most modern of their kind. Large machines are required in a workshop that makes items as large as 16,000 tonnes. In the machine hall, we find Gerhard Berg Larsen at this lathe, which is 10 meters long and thus Norway's largest of its kind. Photo: Sverre A.
