1916, historical, portrait of a British WW1 soldier in uniform, sitting on a chair outside on a narrow wooden balcony, England, UK. The British army Khaki uniforms were made from wool, with most soldiers, particularly the infantry, wearing puttees as seen here. These were cloth bands wound round a solider's leg from their anke to their knee, designed to provide support when walking, protection from hazards on the battefield and to prevent water getting into their boots in harsh weather conditions. They were also used in emergencies as a bandage. 1934, historical, outside a country house on a gravel path, a young girl in a stylist coat and boots, sitting on a tricycle - possibly a Tri-ang model made by the British company, Lines Bros- England, UK. Vietnam: Annamese 'tirailleurs' or Vietnamese colonial soldiers waiting to go into battle at Ypres, Belgium, in 1916. Ypres occupied a strategic position during World War I because it stood in the path of Germany's planned sweep across the rest of Belgium and into France. In the Second Battle of Ypres (22 April to 25 May 1915), the Germans used poison gas for the first time on the Western Front (they had used it earlier at the Battle of Bolimov on 3 January 1915) and captured high ground east of the town. The first gas attack occurred against Canadian, British, and French soldiers. Original WW1 postcard of British wounded convalescent soldiers some with bandages, one has an eye & head wound, others may have shell shock / PTSD. Some wearing blue hospital 'blues' uniforms, others overcoats, outside a Field Hospital, a medical facility behind the front lines, or base hospital at the rear in France maybe, or a 'reserve' hospital back in the U.K. A soldier of the York and Lancaster Regiment stands in the middle of the group, perhaps these men are from his regiment. There are several Royal Army Medical Corps privates in attendance together with staff nurses, Circa 1915-1918.
