Japan: Tokugawa Iemochi (17 July 1846 - 29 August 1866), fourteenth ruler of the Tokugawa Shogunate (r. 1858-1866). Hanging scroll painting by Tokugawa Mochinaga (1831-1884), c. 1866-1867. Tokugawa Iemochi, born Kikuchiyo, was the 14th shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate. In 1858 he was adopted by shogun Tokugawa Iesada, and made his successor. Iesada died shortly afterwards and Iemochi became the new shogun. His short reign saw much internal turmoil due to Japan's 're-opening' to Western nations after Japan's first major contact with the United States, weakening the shogunate.
