In 478 BC he was suspected of conspiring with the Persians having allegedly sent a letter King Xerxes I, saying he wished to bring Sparta and the rest of Greece under Persian control, in return for the hand of the king's daughter to which Xerxes agreed. Facing arrest, Pausanias escaped to the temple of Athena of the Brazen House. The Spartan leaders surrounded the temple and when Pausanias was on the brink of starving to death they carried him out, and he died in 470 BC.
