An old engraving of British Army uniforms of the mid-1800s. It is from a Victorian history book of c.1900. By 1842 most flintlock weapons had been replaced by percussion muskets and Infantry equipment was gradually modernised. The old method of cross-belted was being replaced at this time by a single shoulder belt supporting the cartridge pouch and a waistbelt with locket and clasp, which supported the bayonet in a frog. In 1855 a new infantry cap was introduced to replace the straight-sided ‘Albert’ shako. Although similar it had a deeper back and was tapered towards the crown. 1916, historical, portrait of a British WW1 soldier in uniform, sitting on a chair outside on a narrow wooden balcony, England, UK. The British army Khaki uniforms were made from wool, with most soldiers, particularly the infantry, wearing puttees as seen here. These were cloth bands wound round a solider's leg from their anke to their knee, designed to provide support when walking, protection from hazards on the battefield and to prevent water getting into their boots in harsh weather conditions.
