An old engraving of the men on horseback out ‘hawking’ (falconry), England, UK in medieval times. It is from a Victorian history book of c.1900. Here the falconer (left) carries a hooded falcon on a wooden frame. The sport of hawking, gamehawking or falconry, was one of their favourite forms of hunting for the upper classes, nobility and royalty in the Middle Ages. Falconry is the hunting of wild animals in their natural state and habitat by means of a trained bird of prey. Small animals such as squirrels and rabbits often fall prey to these birds. An old engraving of typical clothing worn c. 1800 in Georgian Britain. It is from a Victorian history book of c.1900. Here people of the upper and middle classes are gathered for a music recital. At this time there was great interest at this time in ancient Greece and Rome, ladies wore ‘full’ dresses, the style based on the drapery of classical statues. The waist was high and uncorseted, and the materials light in colour and texture. Muslin had become a fashionable fabric. British Victorian games and pastimes - Playing shuttlecock or Battledore in the 1830's. It was sometimes referred to as Jeu de Volant, an attempt by the upper classes to distance themselves from similar games played by their working class counterparts. The early sport related to that of modern badminton. The bats were the BATtledores and the object of the game was to pass the shuttlecock backwards & forwards between players without it falling to the ground. The game has a long history with the shuttlecocks taking many lightweight forms,e.g.cork & feathers, sweet corn cobs and corn leaves.
