Apr. 17, 2012 - ''Away Aloft'' This sailing ship command is almost a thing of the past, now that Japan is launching shops over 300.000 tons deadweight, but it is still to be heard aboard the ''Kaio Maru'' aboard which cadets are trained for future marine officers, and Japan Self defence Naval Force. The beautiful old sailing ship is kept in an immaculate condition, and each year goes for long cruises to foreign countries to give the cadets sailing experience-the hard way. Coast Guard Academy Cadets Return from Practice Cruise. Laying aloft, U.S. Coast Guard Academy Cadets on a summer practice cruise scramble up the ropes to the main shrouds of the training bark EAGLE. Handling the 22,000 square feet of sail and more than 20 miles of rigging on the 295-ft. bark presents a great challenge to the young Cadets in the art of seamanship. The Cadets also received training in modern seamanship aboard the Cutter CAMPBELL which accompanied the bark.
