Redfern is an inner Sydney suburb. It first started to attract Aboriginal residents soon after the Second World War. The population continued to rise, peaking in the later 1970's, at fifteen hundred. Redfern has become a focal point for Aboriginal people throughout Australia as it was here that several organisations sprung up in the 1970's to serve its people. One of the first of these was the Redfern Aboriginal Medical service and its parallel the Redfern Aboriginal Legal Service. The need for medical and legal services for Aboriginals became apparent in 1967.
