China Lake, CA, USA. 26th Apr, 2014. Little Petroglyph Canyon on the China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station in the Mojave Desert contains more than 20,000 documented petroglyph images. These were created by the Coso people who inhabited the region from Paleoindian times to the present. The images are carved into basalt rock and are the largest concentration of petroglyphs in the western hemisphere. Big and Little Petroglyph Canyons are a designated U.S. National Historic Landmark.
