The first in 2015 put into service destroyer D 153 'Xi'an' on the way back from a fleet visit in St. Petersburg in the Kiel Canal. The modern Type 52C destroyers are the first Chinese Navy's missile destroyers to have extensive air defense abilities. They have four fixed radar flaughs with electronic phasing (Active Phases Array), as well as a vertical launching system (VLS) for HHQ-9 long range missiles. The Navy of the People's Republic of China has been for years to modernize its fleet and expand. The goal is to transform the fleet from a pure coastal defense fleet into a global fleet.
