An old engraving of Tiffany’s clay tile- and pipe-making machine. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. It consisted of a vertical pug mill with rotating curved knives within it. A screw mechanism forced out clay through a die (dod or mould) and the clay pipes ended up on rollers (right). Some of various dies are shown in the foreground. The worker holds a rocking frame with cutting wires – pulling this down would cut the clay to the correct length required. Once fired, these would be mostly used in drainage systems.
