Dante and Beatrice, 1883. By Henry Holiday (1839-1927). The painting is based on Dante's autobiographical work La Vita Nuova which describes his love for Beatrice Portinari (1265-1290). Dante Alighieri (c1265-1321) concealed his love by pretending to be attracted to other women. The painting depicts an incident when Beatrice, having heard rumours relating to Dante's infatuation with her, refuses to speak to him. The painting shows Beatrice (wearing white), her friend Mona Vanna followed by Beatrice's maidservant walking past Dante on the Santa Trinita Bridge in Florence, Italy.
