Some of the thousands of dead fish that washed ashore along Casey Key after dying from a red tide in the Gulf of Mexico on the west coast of Florida, USA. A red tide is a higher-than-normal concentration of a microscopic alga that produces toxic chemicals harmful to both marine life and humans. In addition to its unpleasant smell, a red tide can create airborne toxins that cause serious illness in people with severe or chronic respiratory conditions, such as emphysema or asthma. Red tides have been documented along Florida's Gulf coast as far back as the 1840s; these fish were killed in 2021. A dead Ballyhoo fish (Hemiramphus brasiliensis) washed ashore on a sandy beach at Casey Key after dying from a red tide in the Gulf of Mexico on the west coast of Florida, USA. A young West Indian manatee floats on its back with flippers crossed after dying as the result of a hazardous 'red tide' in the murky Intracoastal Waterway along the Gulf of Mexico at Osprey in Sarasota County on the west coast of Florida, USA. A red tide is a higher-than-normal concentration of a microscopic algae that produces toxic chemicals harmful to both marine life and humans. 2018 was an especially deadly year for manatees, sea turtles, dolphins and fish. London, UK. 4th July, 2021. Animal rights activists from We Stand for the Animals and Animal Rebellion perform a memorial service where participants hold photos of animals or frozen dead animals to acknowledge the lives of animals in a respectful way. To honour them in death in a way that most animals will never be honoured in life. The animals present in the ceremony represent the billions of non-human animals used by humans for food, clothing, entertainment, science and as companions. Divers sometimes mistakenly call this a tiger sponge. But it is, in fact, a colonial sea squirt (Botrylloides magnicoecum: 8 cms.) and has the common name of magnificent ascidian. It forms a fleshy encrustation on rocks or small pieces of dead coral. The zooids are arranged in parallel rows around atrial siphons, through which water is passed for feeding purposes. Sea squirts are protochordates and so are linked to all animals which have backbones - including humans. So, this colony is composed of individuals who could be regarded as our very distant cousins! This aquatic mammal, also known as a sea cow, was temporarily roped to a pier piling until scientists collected the body for study.
