The Supper at Emmaus, c. 1720. In the Gospel of Luke (24:30-31), two disciples walked to the town of Emmaus after the Crucifixion, and the resurrected Christ followed them unrecognized. At dinner that evening he revealed himself, took bread from the table, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to the two men. When the disciples realized who was before them, Jesus vanished. Here Christ appears just before tearing the bread. Piazzetta emphasizes the dramatic tension by placing only three monumental and isolated foreground figures before an indeterminate background. The Supper at Emmaus. Artist: Velázquez (Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez) (Spanish, Seville 1599-1660 Madrid). Dimensions: 48 1/2 x 52 1/4 in. (123.2 x 132.7 cm). Date: 1622-23. The picture may have been painted in Seville, where Velázquez was trained, or in Madrid, where he moved in 1623. The way to Emmaus, no.2, 1914. In this scene, the resurrected Christ has found two disciples on the road to Emmaus who are dressed like working-class contemporaries of Strang. A disguised Christ interacts with them and they convince him to travel with them, all the while discussing with sadness the recent event of his death. The road is minimally described, and there is nothing in the distance apart from a few houses on the left. The message of Christ's humanity, surely consistent with Strang's socialist sympathies, is what ultimately counts.
