Originally built for Sir Thomas Smith during the reign of Elizabeth I to replace a 12th-century house on the same site, building was carried out over several intervals (1567-8, 1572-3) interspersed between Smith's stints as ambassador to France. According to local legend, Hill Hall was once the site of a duel between seven brothers, for the hand of a beautiful girl. Every brother was killed. Discord broke out in the inner circles of court in December 1397, when Henry Bolingbroke, Earl of Derby, and Thomas de Mowbray, Earl of Nottingham, became embroiled in a quarrel. According to Bolingbroke, Mowbray had claimed that the two, as former Lords Appellant, were next in line for royal retribution. Mowbray denied these charges, as such a claim would have amounted to treason. A parliamentary committee decided that the two should settle the matter by battle, but at the last moment Richard stopped the duel and exiled the two dukes instead: Mowbray for life, Bolingbroke for ten years.
