Thirlwall Castle, a unique 14th century hall house, located near Greenhead, Northumberland, that was officially opened to the public for the first time in its 600-year history after a three-year conservation programme to make it a safe place to visit. * The hall was the ancestral property of the Thirlwall family, who abandoned it in the early 17th century, and was more recently home to bats, swifts and other animals and plants. Although principally a family home, it formed part of a network of watchtowers which were used to defend the border and repel Scottish attacks. 1911 A revolutionary Scottish production of 'Bunty Pulls the Strings' took London by storm. It was written by Graham Moffat, playwright and promoted by Oscar Hammerstein ( Oscar Greeley Clendenning Hammerstein II). This photo shows the actors in the original performance. The play was staged at the Playhouse, London, then ran for some 600 performances at the Haymarket Theatre. The cast was very much a family affair and included Moffat, wife Maggie (who designed the costumes and was an active suffragette), their daughter Winifred, also two brothers, and a sister. Terracotta head of a man. Culture: Cypriot. Dimensions: H. 11 1/2 in. (29.2 cm). Date: ca. 600 B.C.. The Cesnola Collection is fortunate to have two fine early heads that belonged to full-length figures. Large-scale terracotta sculpture began to be made on Cyprus during the mid-seventh century B.C. Molds were used for the heads, while the bodies were handmade. This bearded head wears the helmetlike headgear that appears on the nearby limestone sculptures. Details are articulated with considerable care, and remaining pigment suggests the liveliness of the figures' original appearance. RM2A51WJ0–Pilgrim's Ampulla with Scenes of the Crucifixion (front) and the Ascension (back), c. 600. The images found on the sides of surviving lead pilgrims ampullae include scenes relating to the life of Christ, and by extension to the holy sites (loca sancta) where the events took place. Cast into the sides of this ampulla are scenes of Christ's Crucifixion and Ascension. The use of such sacred images on these vessels illustrates the early Christian belief that images were carriers of divine power. The invention of this device for raising water by either a spiral tube wound round an axis, or by a broad screw fitted in a tube, is attributed to Archimedes (c187-212BC) but there is evidence that it was known and used for irrigation as early as 600 BC. Dan-Air, the company accused of labelling cabin staff as sexually promiscuous, decided to send bouquets of flowers to its 600 stewardesses - including about 60 based at Newcastle. The move was described as a gesture of goodwill by the airline, which is also giving £5,000 to a children's trust which organises flights for disabled and deprived youngsters. The early St Valentine's Day gift was made after talks between management and cabin crew representatives of the Transport and General Workers' Union. 12/ Stock Photohttps://www.alamy.com/image-license-details/?v=1https://www.alamy.com/dan-air-stewardesses-left-to-right-linda-clough-jeanette-jenkins-and-anne-liddle-dan-air-the-company-accused-of-labelling-cabin-staff-as-sexually-promiscuous-decided-to-send-bouquets-of-flowers-to-its-600-stewardesses-including-about-60-based-at-newcastle-the-move-was-described-as-a-gesture-of-goodwill-by-the-airline-which-is-also-giving-5000-to-a-childrens-trust-which-organises-flights-for-disabled-and-deprived-youngsters-the-early-st-valentines-day-gift-was-made-after-talks-between-management-and-cabin-crew-representatives-of-the-transport-and-general-workers-union-12-image466308284.html

A portrait of Franz Peter Schubert (1797-1828) was an Austrian composer of the late Classical and early Romantic eras.
