Aden's natural harbour lies in the crater of a dormant volcano, which now forms a peninsula joined to the mainland by a low isthmus. This harbour, Front Bay, was first used by the ancient Kingdom of Awsan between the 5th and 7th centuries BC. The modern harbour is on the other side of the peninsula. United Kingdom/Central Africa: James Grant (11 April 1827 - 11 February 1892), Scottish explorer. Stipple engraving by S. Hollyer (fl. 19th century), c. 1864. James Augustus Grant was a Scottish explorer of eastern equatorial Africa. In 1860 Grant joined John Hanning Speke in the memorable expedition which solved the problem of the Nile sources. They left Zanzibar in 1860 and reached Gondokoro, where the travellers were again in touch with what they regarded as civilisation, in 1863. Speke was the leader, but Grant carried out several independent investigations and botanical discoveries.
