Edward John Smith RD RNR (27 January 1850 – 15 April 1912) was a British sea captain and naval officer1. Smith is best known as the captain of the RMS Titanic. He was at the helm of the Titanic on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York City in April 1912. On the night of April 14, the ship struck an iceberg. Smith ordered a report of the damage, and it was determined that the ship would founder. At 2:20 am on April 15, the Titanic sank, resulting in the death of some 1,500 people. Smith was last seen on the bridge. His body was never found.
