At the time of the Armada, Elizabeth reviews the troops at Tilbury. By Henry Justice Ford (1860-1941). The Spanish Armada (Grande y Felicísima Armada) was a Habsburg Spanish fleet of 130 ships, under the command of the Duke of Medina Sidonia, with the purpose of escorting an army from Flanders to invade England. The aim was to overthrow Queen Elizabeth I and her establishment of Protestantism in England. On 8th August 1588 Elizabeth went to Tilbury to encourage her forces, and the next day, legend has it, arrived on horseback in her own personal battle armour. RMRHPNEG–At the time of the Armada, Elizabeth reviews the troops at Tilbury. By Henry Justice Ford (1860-1941). The Spanish Armada (Grande y Felicísima Armada) was a Habsburg Spanish fleet of 130 ships, under the command of the Duke of Medina Sidonia, with the purpose of escorting an army from Flanders to invade England. The aim was to overthrow Queen Elizabeth I and her establishment of Protestantism in England. On 8th August 1588 Elizabeth went to Tilbury to encourage her forces, and the next day, legend has it, arrived on horseback in her own personal battle armour.

Elizabeth I, Queen of England (1558-1603), last monarch of the House of Tudor. She was born in Greenwich (now in London) on 7.9.1533 and died in Richmond upon Thames (now in London) on 24.3.1603. She was the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, came to the throne after the death of her half-sister Mary the Catholic. With the help of Baron Burghley, she reestablished the Anglican State Church with the Act of Uniformity of 1559. She remained unmarried (the Virgin Queen).
