Persian polo, 14th century. After racing and hunting, polo is the oldest of all sports involving the horse. It was probably invented in Persia, and possibly in the time of Darius. From the beginning the game made great and special demands on the pony and its training. 'Their horses,' said an English traveller in 1613, 'are so well trained to this that they run after the ball like cats.' They must have been predominantly Arab. United Kingdom: 'The Byerley Turk'. Oil on canvas painting by John Wootton (c. 1682-1764), c. 1700s. The Byerley Turk or Byerly Turk (c. 1684-1706), was the earliest of three stallions that were the founders of the modern Thoroughbred horse racing bloodstock (the other two are the Godolphin Arabian and the Darley Arabian). The stallion is believed to have been captured by Captain Robert Byerley at the Battle of Buda (1686), served as Byerley's war horse when he was dispatched to Ireland in 1689 during King William's War and saw further military service in the Battle of the Boyne. A late 19th century view of thoroughbred horses training on Bury Heath near Newmarket, a market town in Suffolk, England. It is generally considered the global centre and birthplace of thoroughbred horse racing, dating as far back as 1174, making it the earliest known racing venue of post-classical times. King James I (reigned 1603–1625) greatly increased the popularity of horse racing there, and King Charles I followed this by inaugurating the first cup race in 1634. The Jockey Club's clubhouse is in Newmarket, though its administration is based in London. This watercolour, c.1830, is the work of a Kalighat painter of Bengal. Racing was by now widespread and popular, and Calcutta was its headquarters. Racing in Bengal 1830. This watercolour, c.1830, is the work of a Kalighat painter of Bengal. Racing was by now widespread and popular, and Calcutta was its headquarters. No doubt the artist saw it, but his design is said to owe as much to English prints as to observation. therre is certainly a strong look of John Nost Sartorius and even James Seymour in the stylised positions of the horses. The History of Horse Racing by Roger Longrigg, page 267.
