When the Chilean Government steamer the 'Yelcho', bearing Sir Ernest Shackleton to the rescue of his comrades, approached Elephant Island on August 28th, 1916, many on the island feared the ship would pass them by without noticing them. The party lit a smoke fire to attract attention and conveyed all their personal belongings - the records of the expedition, boxes of photographic plates, etc - to the water's edge so as to be ready to embark the moment the ship landed.
