A Whit Walks procession in Union Street, Oldham, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, England, UK c.1960. The large banner has an image of a saint and the words ‘Pray for us’ on it. A man carries a cross ahead of choirboys. The street’s shops included a newsagent (advertising the Manchester Evening Chronicle) and a branch of the Failsworth Building Society. The Church of England religious event traditionally took place on Whit Friday, with children heavily involved along with brass and silver bands. This is taken from an old black and white negative – a vintage 1950s/60s photograph. ITALY : EIGHTH ARMYMOBILE ARTILLERY - The 'Stiffkey Stick' takes its name from the village in which it was invented. Sgt. G. Barnett of Alexander Avenue, Failsworth, Manchester, moves the sights by means of hand-controls and aim-off for the speed of the aircraft and for its vertical deflection.
