John Leake was a civilian canteen manager with the Royal Navy who found himself shooting at attacking aircraft instead of serving tea when his ship was sent into the thick of the Falklands conflict. Mr Leake, 34, fired a belt-fed machine gun flat out all day as waves of Argentine jets pounded HMS Ardent, hitting her with 17 bombs and killing 22 crew. He was credited with damaging a Skyhawk.
