The most commonly seen British Mayfly of the genus Ephemera. The life cycle usually takes one or two years and Nymphs can reach about 30 millimetres (1.2 in) of length. They dig tunnels into the gravel in the beds of rivers, feed by filtering organic detritus, emerge in Spring and move towards shallow waters. Adults mainly can be found in May–June (hence the common name of mayfly), at the end of many larval stages. Females fly on the surface of the water, dip their abdomen onto the surface and lay the eggs. At the end of this process females falls on to the surface and die. . English: A Fishing Boat off a Rocky Coast in a Storm with a Wreck This interpretation of ships heading for destruction on the rocks shows a continuous narrative. In this painting, Bellevois illustrates a broad-bottomed fishing boat filled with people, travelling towards a cluster of large, rough-hewn rocks. The danger of this shoreline is made apparent by the small ship, in the centre right, sinking by the stern. In the foreground, another ship has succumbed to this peril recently: detritus floats in the sea and survivors are gripping onto its masts which are still visible above the water.
