Duke of Gloucester, during visit to R.A.F. Fighter station near Calcutta, shook hands and chatted with Sergeant Pilot J.R. McRae, of St Kilda, Melbourne, who shot down one Jap plane in Burma and damaged others. Officers and men attending the inspection were ordered to wear bush skirts -- open necked Khakhi coat cut like Norfolk jacked -- which Duke favoured for travelling in India. This was the first time bush shirts were recognized and approved as part of R.A.F. uniform. June 22, 1942.
