Alcestes Autograph: Beginning of the symphony which accompanies the entry of Alcides in Tobias Smollett's otherwise unknown play of 'Alcestes', set to music by Handel between 27 December 1749 and 8 January 1750. The composition is the only known specimen of incidental music by Handel and only two acts are extant. The music was never performed as originally composed (for Covent Garden Theatre), but, as appears from the note in the plate, parts of it were used for 'The Choice of Hercules', June - July 1750.
