Admiral Henning von Holtzendorff in a contemporary picture. As member of the Prussian navy (from 1869 on) he gathered experience amongst others in Cameroon and East Asia. He became chief of the deep sea fleet in 1910 and took over the naval staff in the headquarters in 1915. He was appointed Grand Admiral shortly before leaving the navy in 1918. Henning von Holtzendorff was born on the 9th of January in 1853 in Prenzlau and died on the 7th of June in 1919 in Jagow (Uckermark). Statue: Frederich der Grosse, 1740-1786, between 1910 and 1920. Frederick the Great was King in Prussia from 1740 until 1772, and King of Prussia from 1772 until his death in 1786. The statue was donated to the USA by Prince Henry of Prussia as a gift of friendship and gratitude. It was originally erected in 1904 at the Army War College in Washington, D.C. After attempts to destroy the statue, it was removed from public view during World War I.
