Germany: The Opening of the Fifth and Sixth Seals, Revelation 6:9-16. Illuminated miniature from the Ottheinrich Bible by Matthias Gerung (1500-1570), c. 1530-1532. The Ottheinrich Bible was commissioned in c. 1425 by the Royal Court of Bavaria. The unusually large manuscript was not completed until the following century when the German painter and engraver, Matthias Gerung, was offered 60 Rhenish guilders and winter clothes to illustrate the text. The Bible carries the name of the benefactor who supported its completion. Ottheinrich (1502-1559) was the Prince of Neuburg.
