Glassblowing is a glassforming technique that involves inflating molten glass into a bubble (or parison), with the aid of a blowpipe (or blow tube). A person who blows glass is called a glassblower, glassmith, or gaffer. A lampworker manipulates glass with the use of a torch on a smaller scale, such as in producing precision laboratory glassware out of borosilicate glass. Glassblowing involves three furnaces. The first, which contains a crucible of molten glass, is simply referred to as the furnace. An old engraving of the techniques used to create sheet glass (broad, cylinder, German or spread glass) from blown glass. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The use of this glass was vital in The Crystal Palace of 1851, built by Joseph Paxton to house the Great Exhibition. Iron and glass were the ‘new’ materials of Victorian architecture. As the steps show, first long cylinders of glass were blown, then cut along the length and flattened onto a cast-iron table, where it was rolled into a sheet. The sheet, still soft, was annealed to slowly cool it.
