The Grave Stele of Hegeso (c. 410–400 BC) is one of the best surviving examples of Attic grave stelae. A contemplative seated woman picks jewelry from a box held for her by a standing slave-girl. The jewelry would have been painted on to the marble surface. The deceased woman’s name is inscribed above (Hegeso daughter of Proxenos). The relief was found in the ancient cemetery of Athens, the Kerameikos. From around 450, Athenian funerary monuments increasingly depicted women, as their civic importance increased.
