The competition is judged by a steward mounted on horse back with being two dogs being released to chase a precaptured hare which is given a hundred metre head start over over a distance of approximately four hundred metres before reaching an escape route where the greyhounds can not follow. The dog judged to have gained the most ground on the hare before it escapes is judged to have won.
