Dr. Elkin, of the Yale Observatory, has also re-cently done some work of a similar kind by the aid ofa fine heliometer, which is sometimes called a surveyof the Pleiades by triangulation. His results are use-ful in getting the exact time of the occultation of starsin the group by the moon as she moves rapidly throughit, by knowing the exact place of each star so oc-culted. The most surprising advance in our knowledge ofthe Pleiades is the discovery of vast nebulous massesscattered over a large portion of the area of this clus-ter.
