The haughty behaviour of Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury to King Henry II of England led to animosity when the king utter the phrase 'Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?'. Their argument culminated with Becket's murder when knights of Henry II arrived at Canterbury during the afternoon of December 29, 1170 and immediately searched for Thomas Becket. The Archbishop fled to the Cathedral where a service was in progress. The knights found him at the altar, drew their swords and began hacking at their victim finally splitting his skull. Medieval Warwick Castle was a motte-and-bailey fortification built by William the Conqueror in 1068. During the reign of King Henry II (1154–89), it was replaced with a stone castle which took the form of a shell keep with all the buildings constructed against the curtain wall. During the Barons' Rebellion of 1173–74, the Earl of Warwick remained loyal to King Henry II, and the castle was used to store provisions. Situated on a bend of the River Avon, Warwick is the county town of Warwickshire, England.
