White cotton pickers, 11 adult men. This was mid-1890s or earlier. The photo’s back identifies this as “Cotton scene. Near Wagoner. Indian Territory” Indian Territory later became the state of Oklahoma. Two men are holding cotton plant branches in their left hands. Ten men have a long-strapped, white cotton-collecting bag hanging from their shoulders. To the left is an older man with no bag, probably their boss or the landowner. Nobody is smiling. All men are either holding a handful of cotton or have cotton balls somewhere on their clothing. All are wearing hats and most show suspenders.
