An old engraving showing how early cotton gins work. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. A cotton gin (cotton engine) is a machine that separates cotton fibres from their seeds. The fibres are then processed into various cotton goods. The seeds can be used to make cottonseed oil. The mechanical cotton gin was invented by American Eli Whitney in 1793. Whitney's gin used a wire screen and small wire hooks to pull the cotton through, while brushes removed the loose cotton lint. The top illustration shows a version of his gin, the bottom gin is a variant. RM2DCKTX4–An old engraving showing how early cotton gins work.

The famed Raffles Hotel in Singapore honors its namesake with a bust of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, who is regarded as the founder of that Southeast Asian island nation in 1819. Information on the sculpture's pedestal describes the brothers from Armenia who opened the historic hotel in 1887. Since that time it has expanded from a 10-room hostelry to a luxurious grand hotel that underwent its most recent restoration in 2018. The Raffles is well known for its signature alcoholic drink, the Singapore Sling, a refreshing gin-based cocktail first concocted more than a century ago.
