An old engraving of a New England cotton mill, one typical of the ‘Lowell system’ in 1800s. It is from an American history book of 1895. Francis Cabot Lowell (1775–1817) was instrumental in bringing the Industrial Revolution to the United States. Lowell founded the Boston Manufacturing Co in 1813. Its first textile mill was in Waltham, Massachusetts in 1814. Lowell hired young women (‘mill girls’ usually single aged 15–35), and working conditions were comparatively humane. His Waltham-Lowell system combined spinning and weaving cloth under one roof. This revolutionised the cotton industry. An old engraving of men operating a coal-fired puddling furnace. It is from a Victorian book of the 1880s. Puddling is a process in the manufacture of high-grade iron in or furnace. It was developed in the UK by Abraham Darby II, the Cranage brothers and Peter Onions. This was improved upon by Henry Cort at Fontley, Hampshire, England, UK in 1784. The molten pig iron was stirred in a reverberatory furnace, decarbonising the metal and ridding it of impurities. The result was bar iron (malleable wrought iron). This type of furnace would eventually be used to make good-quality carbon steel.
