Zouave was the title given to certain light infantry regiments in the French Army, normally serving in French North Africa between 1831 and 1962. The name was also adopted during the 19th century by units in other armies, especially volunteer regiments raised for service in the American Civil War. The 2nd Rajput was originally established by the British East India Company as a Bengal Native Battalion in 1798 and was brought under royal authority with the declaration of Queen Victoria as Empress of India in 1876. The regiment served in campaigns such as the Second Afghan War, the Boxer Rebellion and the First World War, before being amalgamated with five other Rajput regiments in 1922.

France: A Zouave with full equipment. Watercolour painting by Victor Armand Poirson (19 May 1858 - 13 February 1893), 1888. Zouave was the title given to certain light infantry regiments in the French Army, normally serving in French North Africa between 1831 and 1962. The name was also adopted during the 19th century by units in other armies, especially volunteer regiments raised for service in the American Civil War.
