An old engraving of the ‘Lord of Misrule’ being carried through the crowded streets, England, UK in c.1600. It is from a Victorian history book of c.1900. Here musicians play and there is a man on a hobby-horse. In England the Lord/King/Abbot of Misrule (in Scotland the ‘Abbot of Unreason’) was chosen to preside over the Feast of Fools, Christmas revelries that often included drunkenness and wild partying. This custom was abolished by Henry VIII in 1541, restored by the Catholic Mary I and again abolished by Protestant Elizabeth I, though in places it lingered on for some time longer.
