The Vickers Vimy, a British heavy bomber aircraft developed and manufactured during the latter stages of the First World War to equip the RAF. Only a handful of aircraft entered service by the Armistice, so it never saw active service. During the interwar period, the Vimy became the core of the RAF's heavy bomber force throughout the 1920s. It also set several records for long-distance flights, the most celebrated being the first non-stop crossing of the Atlantic by Alcock and Brown in June 1919. Original WW1 era postcard of a poignant village scene - a group of villagers are watching the planting of the peace tree on 19 July 1919 for the National Celebration of Peace day. There are servicemen in background, a sad old man is sitting next to the tree, the village dignitary or perhaps a father who had lost several sons in the war, behind him a crying girl with hanky. So much loss. The crowd hold banners & British Union Jack flags, French Tricolor flags hangs from a window - perhaps in support of the treaty of Versailles signed in June 1919 - the official ending of the war.
