22-year-old police constable dives into Thames to try to save old man. Police Constable Paxton, aged 22, attached to the Kennington station, nearly lost his life in a vain attempt to save an elderly man who had fallen into the Thames from the Albert Embankment. Seeing the man, 78-year-old Frederick George Wilkins, of Westminster Institution, fall, Paxton threw off his helmet and coat and brought into the bank. The man died later in hospital. PC Paxton received treatment in St Thomas's Hospital.
