King Egbert (771/775–839), also known as Ecgberht, Ecgbert, or Ecgbriht, was King of Wessex from 802 until his death in 839. His father was Ealhmund of Kent. In the 780s Egbert was forced into exile by Offa of Mercia and Beorhtric of Wessex, but on Beorhtric's death in 802 Egbert returned and took the throne. The medieval towers were Reculver's 'most dominant features' and were added in the late 12th century to the church founded in 669, when King Ecgberht of Kent granted land to Bassa the priest for the foundation of a monastery. The church was sited near the centre of the Roman fort, and was built 'almost completely from demolished Roman structures'. The church in turn was demolished in 1809, in what has been described as 'an act of vandalism for which there can be few parallels even in the blackest records of the nineteenth century. Ecgberht (77–839), also spelled Egbert, Ecgbert, or Ecgbriht, was King of Wessex from 802 until his death in 839. Little is known of the first 20 years of Ecgberht's reign, but it is thought that he was able to maintain the independence of Wessex against the kingdom of Mercia, which at that time dominated the other southern English kingdoms. In 825 Ecgberht defeated Beornwulf of Mercia, temporarily ruling Mercia directly. He was however, unable to maintain this dominant position, and within a year he lost the throne of Mercia, but retained control of Kent, Sussex, and Surrey.
