The execution of Archbishop Richard Scope in York following a rebellion against King Henry IV on June 8th, 1405. in 1405, Henry Percy, Earl of Northumberland, Thomas Mowbray, Earl of Norfolk and Richard Scrope, Archbishop of York rebelled against excessive taxation, maltreatment of the Church and the clergy, and corruption in the King’s household. They raised an army of common people in Yorkshire, but stood them down when Ralph Neville, Earl of Westmorland, assured Scrope and Mowbray that their grievances would be met. But Westmorland had them imprisoned, then beheaded outside the city.
