Umed Singh of Kota Hunting Lions, c. 1785-1790. A family of lions with two cubs is caught unawares by royal huntsmen amid a tangle of jungle by the side of a stream. The adult lions twist around, startled by the sound of the horn intended to drive them out of the safety of their glade. The men, other than the ruler at the left, have turbans camouflaged with leaves, and they surround the lions, ready to let spears and arrows fly. Before embarking on a costly finished painting, Indian artists often made preparatory sketches, in which they worked out the particulars of the composition. Study for a Tiger Hunt 1780 Sheikh Taju The court artists of Kota, developed a unique landscape style distinguished by a deep empathy for the rugged terrain and dense foliage of the Kota territories. This is a harsh landscape dominated by lightly wooded hills and steep rocky ravines, and populated by lions, tigers, bears, and boars. In this setting, these royal hunters appear as unwanted intruders and predators, setting traps for the noble animals whose domain this is. Here we see a Kota ruler, possibly Maharao Umed Singh (r. 1771–1819), barely visible amid the craggy trees, aiming his rifle a Stock Photohttps://www.alamy.com/image-license-details/?v=1https://www.alamy.com/study-for-a-tiger-hunt-1780-sheikh-taju-the-court-artists-of-kota-developed-a-unique-landscape-style-distinguished-by-a-deep-empathy-for-the-rugged-terrain-and-dense-foliage-of-the-kota-territories-this-is-a-harsh-landscape-dominated-by-lightly-wooded-hills-and-steep-rocky-ravines-and-populated-by-lions-tigers-bears-and-boars-in-this-setting-these-royal-hunters-appear-as-unwanted-intruders-and-predators-setting-traps-for-the-noble-animals-whose-domain-this-is-here-we-see-a-kota-ruler-possibly-maharao-umed-singh-r-17711819-barely-visible-amid-the-craggy-trees-aiming-his-rifle-a-image458519666.html
