Superintendent Richardson,of the Lancashire Constabulary was posthumously awarded the George Cross for the heroism he displayed on the 23rd of August 1971 in chasing a gang of armed robbers who had attacked a jewellers shop in Blackpool. He and Constable Carl Walker, tackled the raiders and Richardson was shot in the stomach while attempting to persuade one of the criminals to surrender his weapon.
