The Ampulla and Coronation Spoon. When a monarch is anointed, the Dean of Westminster first pours holy anointing oil from an ampulla into a spoon. The original ampulla was a small stone phial, sometimes worn around the neck as a pendant by kings, and otherwise kept inside an eagle-shaped golden reliquary. It is unclear why, after the Restoration, the vessel itself came to be reinterpreted as an eagle standing on a domed base. The Coronation Spoon, dates from the late 12th century and is silver-gilt and set with four pearls, which were added in the 17th century. The Ampulla and Coronation Spoon, 1953. Russia: Adam and Eve as represented on a woodcut in a Russian lubok, 1792. A lubok is a Russian popular print, defined by simple graphics and narratives inspired by literature, religious stories and folk tales. Lubki prints were used as decoration in houses and inns. Early examples from the late 17th and early 18th centuries were woodcuts, then engravings or etchings were typical, and from the mid-19th century lithography. Collar late 17th century Spanish As it was customary to refashion fine laces, early lace pieces in their original form are fairly rare. Landscape late 16th, early 17th century follower of Gillis van Coninxloo In its unfinished state, this pen and gouache landscape has an almost ghost-like appearance. This is partly due to the strong contrast of the colors on the brown paper. Originally, however, the sheet would have had a very different appearance: the edges of the drawing show that the paper actually was blue, but has discolored due to the exposure to sunlight. In its original state, the gouaches therefore would not have stood out as much, and the drawing would have been more legible and appealing.
