Belly of a cargo ship, being unloaded of oranges at Fresh Wharf, London. The oranges, in rectangular crates, are being lifted out of the hold by winches then carried ashore by dockworkers. In this picture one can clearly see the large cushions the dockers wore over their head and shoulders, in order to protect them from the crates that they carried on their heads. The oranges were a special cargo brought to London, from warmer climes, just in time for Christmas. An old engraving of the hydraulic boat repair lift or graving dock on the River Thames, London, England, UK c. 1860. It is from a book of the 1890s on discoveries and inventions during the 1800s. Edwin Clark (1814 –1894) was an English civil engineer, specialising in hydraulics. He is remembered principally as the designer of the Anderton Boat Lift (1875) near Northwich in Cheshire. Picture dated February 28th shows Ely Cathedral in Cambridgeshire, known as The Ship of the Fens shrouded in early morning fog on Sunday morning. Majestic Ely Cathedral was seen shrouded in fog this morning (Sunday) as parts of the UK saw a misty start to the day. The cathedral, known as the Ship of the Fens, looked like it was rising out of the misty Cambridgeshire fields as the fog gradually lifted.
