The elephants first came to the zoo in 1831 and visitors could then ride them, but they left in 2001 going to Whipsnade Wild Animal Park, Bedfordshire. London Zoo was opened to the public in 1847 to aid funding, as it had originally opened in 1828 as a place purely for scientific study by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity committed to the conservation of animals and their habitats.
