The early 1900s caption reads: 'The Horsley Children by George Romney. Few painters have rivalled Romney in expressing the simplicity and naivete of children. These portraits of Master George and Miss Charlotte Horsley are excellent examples of his mastery of an artless pose, and of the reticence of his color. How delightfully the flowers tell against the white dresses.' George Romney (1734-1802) was an English portrait painter. He was the most fashionable artist of his day, painting many leading society figures – including his artistic muse, Emma Hamilton, mistress of Lord Nelson.
